Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
