Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
